Now that we’ve decided to build we need to design the house. Probably my most favorite part! This step can actually take longer than building. Hubby has been complaining that this house has taken us six years to design. He’s afraid if I make changes it’s going to take another six years.
Who hasn’t gone into a house and thought “I like that ….” or “I wouldn’t do that” or any thing like that. I know that every time I go to a home or building I’ve never been in I am always looking at details and design. Finding things that work or don’t. We all have things that we like and don’t like, that’s one of the cool things about us humans; we are different and like different things.
What do I need and want?
I can’t really say what exactly is the first step, since there are so many things that you can do at the same time or in a slightly different order. Lets just start with figuring out what you need and what you would really like. Here is a worksheet to help you figure it out, or at least get a good start on it.
Here are some things to consider when you are designing your home:
- # of Bedrooms
- #of Bathrooms
- Master Suite?
- Formal Front Room/Greeting Room
- Living Room
- Dining Room
- Breakfast Nook
- Family Room
- Laundry – Room or Closet
- # of Floors
- Deck / Patio
- Garage – # cars
- Bonus Room
- Sun Room
- Music Room
- Exercise Room
- In the Kitchen
Some of the items on this list may not be a need or a want for you, maybe you have never thought of having your own library or sun room. You need to figure out what you NEED and then what you WANT.
For us we NEED 5 Bedrooms, minimum of 3 bathrooms, an office, a laundry ROOM, storage, Pantry in the Kitchen, 3 car garage, basement. We WANT a formal front room, family room, bonus room, master suite, large deck and a patio.
The next thing to do is to start collecting pictures of things things that you like in regards to your home. Pinterest is a great place for that, I have boards for bathrooms, floor plans, exteriors, flooring, decks, and many others. You can start looking at floor plans on-line to get an idea of what you might like. We found a plan several years ago that we thought we would like; however we have made drastic changes to it and have only kept certain features we really, really liked.
This is an important step, gathering as much information as you can. Don’t over think it, but don’t pin/ collect everything out there. Sometimes one idea won’t work with the way everything else is laid out but another example you have may give you an idea that does work. Honestly, I’ve redesigned my master bathroom 4 or 5 times and my kitchen almost that many and I may still change some things.
Let’s stop there for now. Let me know if you have questions. Happy gathering!
